General COVID Safe Event Notes

This year's event will be staged from the western end of Foreshore Park on the Crn Wharf and Watt St. This is to reduce the number of spectators and general public around the event compound. The main competitor areas will be fenced and only competitors will be allowed in this area. You must SCAN a NSW Health QR code when you enter the area. We have purposely spaced the event compound and infrastructure out and you will unfortunately not experience as much of the great atmosphere as in previous years. The event will however be COVID safe and we ask everyone to remember to obey the COVID marshals and signage instructions and respect the space of other competitors. We respectfully ask you to limit the number of spectators that may accompany you to the event area. There are ample spectators points around the swim, cycle and run courses, but we will only be allowing a limited number of spectators into the finish line viewing area. This will be capped and we ask spectators to only enter this area for your finish and then leave!

Overall Course Map
The course map is below and can be downloaded. The course is similar to last year but does have some areas that have changed. We should also remind you that, while roads are closed (with a substantial Traffic Management Plan in place) for this event, in a busy City environment some parked vehicles will be on the course. Please pay attention to your direction and speed at all times. If a motorist or pedestrian attempts to leave/cross  the course area during the event, we ask you to revert to normal road/pedestrian rules and report the incident to one of our Traffic or General Marshals. Your safety and the safety of the general public is paramount to the continuing success of this event.

A Video Race Briefing and Course description are available below. You must watch this for your race distance before you participate. Course points to note:
  1. The event compound is on the western end of Foreshore Park in front of Customs House, Crn of Wharf and Watt St.
  2. The swim course will start for the Sprint (8.15am start) and Enticer (9.45am start) swims from Customs House Jetty and from Queens Wharf (western side) for the Standard/Olympic Distance swim (6.30am start).
    1. ALL swims finish at the Customs House Jetty
    2. There are scaffolding stairs below the water line for you to easily exit the water.
    3. Nobbys SLSC will be implementing a substantial water safety plan
    4. You are never more than 35m from the shore.
    5. Note the swim leg for the Sprint and Enticer is out (west against the tide) and back (east with the tide).
    6. The swim leg for the Standard/Olympic Distance is from the stairs on the western side of Queens Wharf, out 500m (west against the tide) and 1000m back (east with the tide).  Please allow time to walk the 500m to the swim start.
  3. The cycle leg is mapped below and in the Video Briefing. Some points to note:
    1. You only enter the Horseshoe Beach Rd on the way out only (not on the way back) for each lap.
    2. Please pay attention for rogue pedestrians at all times
    3. There are speed humps along Shortland Esplanade.
    4. The long course for Sprint and Olympic distances does not use the south Newcastle cliff this year, due to construction. You will have bike traffic both ways on Watt St.
    5. There are some substantial climbs. Please stay left to allow passing. Never pass on the left!
    6. There are some substantial descents. Please control your speed, in particular on the Watt and Church St turn.
  4. The run leg is simple, but you will need to stay right. There is a ramp over a garden edge near the pilot station. Please be careful when using this ramp.
