COURSE TIPS

With the constantly changing landscape of Newcastle, please take note of the following course information:

  • All events finish at Pat Jordan Oval, Carrington (off Tully Street).

  • The start line for the 12km Hill to Harbour is unchanged from 2024 – starting near the Bar Beach Bowling Club/Skate Park on Memorial Drive.

  • As a general rule, please keep left throughout the course. All participants will be moving in the same direction.

  • Marshalling & safety - All left or right turn points will be clearly marked and supported by our amazing volunteers from local surf life saving, running, and social clubs. Keep an eyeout for a couple of gutters on course!

Course update – King Edward Park to Shortland Esplanade
Due to completion of the South Newcastle skate park, we can now run down the cliff and along the Newcastle Beach foreshore. This is past Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club and past the Newcastle Baths. You will then rejoin Shortland Esplanade to continue to the Nobbys Beach area.

  • For those who have raced in previous years, we NO LONGER run on the breakwall!...but do run around the Fort! (another sneaky hill!!)

TIMING CHIPS

Your timing chip is attached to your race bib, which you pick up at race kit collection, but it must be removed and worn on your shoe. The timing chip is separate and reusable and must be returned to us in the finish area.

Wearing your bib and chip:

  • Attach your bib to the front of your shirt using the supplied pins, or to the front if using a race belt.

  • Remove the timing chip from the bib packet and secure it to your shoe lace.

  • If your shoes don’t have laces, you can ask for a cable tie at the registration table.

Please note:

  • No timing chip = no official race time.

  • The chip must register across the purple timing mats at the finish line and at split points.

Please see photo of how to attach your chip below.

BUSES & PARKING ON RACE DAY

Getting to Your 12km or 6km Start – Race Day Buses

All events finish at Pat Jordan Oval, (off Tully St, Carrington).

If you're participating in the 12km Hill to Harbour and have booked a $5 bus ticket, we’re providing pre-race shuttle buses from the finish area to the start line at Bar Beach (also stopping at The Station for 6km participants to get off).

Please note: If you didn’t purchase a bus ticket when you entered but would now like to, you can still do so. Scroll to the bottom of this page to purchase:

    • Corner of Hannell Street and Honeysuckle Drive (public car park nearby)

  • Buses will shuttle continuously during this time

  • The last bus leaves Carrington at 7:15am sharp

  • If you are in the 6km event and purchased a bus ticket, you will need to be on one of the later buses and disembark at the Station. Just tell the bus driver and be ready to disembark.

Important:
There is no pick-up at The Station ...only drop off – please head to one of the locations listed above.

Parking or Light Rail

We strongly recommend using public transport to get to the event. The Wickham interchange is very close to the Hannel St Bus Pick up point and only 1.2km to the finish line.

There is FREE car parking on corner of Hannell St and Honeysuckle Drive. This is just 230m to the Light Rail interchange, which has the first service at 5.15am.

Getting to the 6km Halfa Hill to Harbour Start

Due to road closures along the Foreshore, we recommend using public transport or getting dropped off on the Scott Street/Hunter Street side of town.

Public transport option:

  • The Light Rail is a great way to get to the start line

  • Hop off at Queens Wharf Station

  • It’s about a 200m walk to the start line, located opposite The Station (old Newcastle Railway Station)

  • Plan your trip here:
    Light Rail Timetable

Parking options nearby:

  • Paid parking is available at:

    • Wright Lane, Honeysuckle

    • Argyle Street parking station

    • Bolton Street parking station

Please allow extra time to reach the start area, especially if arriving on Sunday morning.

BAG SECURITY, DRINK STATIONS, DRINK STATIONS, FIRST AID, MEDALS & PRIZE MONEY

Bag Security & Transport

We will have limited bag transport available for 12km competitors at Bar Beach and 6km participants at The Station - Small valuables can be sent to the finish line at Pat Jordan Oval.

Please note:

  • Do not bring large items – space is limited

  • Bags may take a little time to arrive – in fact, you might beat us there

Drink Stations

There are drink stations no more than 3km apart on all courses. There will be water and electrolytes on all stations. Thank you to our incredible staff and volunteers who run these.

First aid

We have a professional paramedical team on hand at this event including mobile units around the course. Just let a marshal know if you need attention.

Toilets

There are toilets at the start at Bar Beach and Nobbys and also King Edward Park and Nobbys Surf Club and Honeysuckle. You must leave and enter the course at the same point when using the toilets.

Medals and Prize Money

All finishers will receive a finisher medal to celebrate their achievement. We also recognise the overall male and female winners of the 12km Hill to Harbour:

  • 1st place: $1000

  • 2nd place: $500

  • 3rd place: $250

The first male and female to reach the top of the initial climb of the Hill to Harbour (Memorial Drive hill) are crowned King and Queen of the Hill, and each will receive $500. Please note: we no longer award medals for age category winners. This change was made because many went unclaimed in previous years, leading to unnecessary waste. We're working to reduce our environmental impact. Thanks for your understanding and support.

Running, Social, Church, Rowing and Surf Clubs on the JOB

With the event running straight past most of the Surf Life Saving Clubs, you will be glad to know that Nobbys and Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Clubs are using the event to raise funds for their clubs. Give them a smile as you run past or take a drink from one of the nippers and senior club members helping their clubs raise funds to keep us safe on city beaches. Our friends at the 530 runners, Wananchi Social and Newcastle Rowing Club are also on the job. Thanks to all our friends in the running/sport community.
