City of Newcastle - NewRun - Update 2

THANKS FOR ENTERING THE CITY OF NEWCASTLE NEWRUN RUNNING FESTIVAL FOR 2021, to be held Sunday 11th April. We look forward to welcoming you to Newcastle. With our new Marathon course and the continuing improvements to the City's foreshore and infrastructure, the event is shaping up to be another great event for Newcastle and the Hunter.  This is update number 2 of 3 updates you will receive, so please take a few minutes to read below or pass onto anyone you entered into the event.


We are staging this event under the most recent NSW COVID Health orders. We have a COVID plan and will ask you to comply with the instructions of our COVID marshal on the day. In general, this relates to social distancing while marshalling and at the start areas. It also relates to reducing contact and crowding. For this reason we ask that you limit the number of support crew you bring to the event. There are ample viewing points on the course and we ask that any spectators do not congregate around the finish line. It is important that you do not regard this as a 'normal' year. We will ask you to disperse from the finish area as soon as you are recovered. There is plenty happening at The Station, just up the road and the Hunter St Mall, just across the road. Further we will not be staging a presentation after the event. Awesome FINISHER medals will be available as you leave the finish area and Overall and Age Category awards can be collected from the Admin Tent approx. 1 hour after the race finish. 
It is important that if you are unwell you do not attend and get a COVID test. 

Clarification of entries

As many of you have entered some time ago and with various cancellations, transfers, and replacements, please note the following steps to check and or change your entry. All changes done on the system will incur a $10 fee. You cannot cancel your entry in the changes system and we are no longer offering refunds. Our normal refund policy is now in place regarding cancelations
To check or change your entry, see below: 
  1. If you wish to check your entry, change to a different distance, transfer your entry to another person or add a 4th person or change members of a relay around, the person who made the entry and/or set up the team can log into their account using the email address they used and make the changes by going to the Entry Page  and clicking the Changes button down the bottom right hand corner. (as in the attached picture) If you have forgotten your password, just click Forgot Password. You need to use the email address you used to set up the account.

Race Details - Event Compound - Race Kit collection

All events finish on Market St Lawn (old rail line park), opposite Queen Wharf on Wharf Rd Newcastle. This is the registration pack and medal collection area and also the start and finish for the marathon, 1/2 marathon, 5km and 2km runs. Note the 10km starts at Bar Beach.
Please note the following: 
  1. Late Entries (if not sold out), Race Kit and Shirt collection can be done EITHER Saturday or Sunday. We strongly recommend Saturday.  Please bring some form of photo ID. Note: Entries are not transferable on race weekend. 
  2. If you wish to collect another persons race kit, please bring a written authority to collect the race kit and some form of photo ID. We will not randomly hand out race kits! 
  3. Race Kits Saturday (the day before the event) We strongly suggest that if you can, pick up your race kit on Saturday (the day before the Event).
    1. Competitors in all events should attend the Registration Marquee in Market St Lawns off Wharf Rd Newcastle from 10.00am to 4.00pm.  
  4. Race Kits Sunday (race day) Late entries (if not sold out)  or race kit pick up will be from the starting point for each race. Allow plenty of time if you want to pick up your race kit on the morning. 
    1. 5km event - pick up will be at the Registration Marquee in Market St Lawns off Wharf Rd Newcastle  from 5.00am. The start line is just 50m away.  5km starts 7.50am 
    2. 10km event will be at Cooks Hill Surf Club opposite Empire Park Bar Beach on Memorial Drive from 7.00 - 8.00am - Please leave enough time and watch for Half Marathon runners after 7.20am when crossing Memorial Drive. 10km starts 8.30am. 
    3. Half Marathon at Registration Marquee in Market St Lawns off Wharf Rd Newcastle from 5.00am. Half marathon starts 7.00am
    4. Marathon race kit pick up from the Registration Marquee in Market St Lawns off Wharf Rd Newcastle from 5.00am. Starts 6.00am 
    5. Hunter Valley Orthodontics 2K4FUN at the Registration Marquee in Market St Lawns off Wharf Rd Newcastle.  Race Kit pick up from 8.30am . Starts 10.00am. 

Our new COVID SAFE Race Kit collection process:

To minimise the contact points and improve speed of collection, when you arrive to collect your race kit we will ask you to use your phone to retrieve your entry via the following system: 
  1. Scan a QR CODE.
  1. Input the phone number that you used when you entered.
  1. You will will receive a code.
  1. Input the code on your screen.
  1. Confirm.
  1. You will be given you Race number, timing chips and T-Shirt (if you entered before the 28th March ).

Race Details - Course tips

With the constantly changing landscape of Newcastle, please note some points about the courses: 
  1. All events finish on Market St Lawn (old rail line park, opposite Queen Wharf). There is a light rail station 100m from the finish line. 
  2. Start line for Hill to Harbour 10km - is UNCHANGED. Same location at Bar Beach. 
  3. All events will be keeping right as a general rule. Except for the half marathon on the way to Bar Beach this will be signposted. Pay attention at the Nobby's roundabout as there will be a cross over point during the half marathon. 
  4. Start line for the Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 5km and 2km events are all on the southern side of Wharf Rd at Queens Wharf, heading east.
  5. Start times are:
    1. Marathon - 6.00am - Relay to start separated from the main pack. 
    2. 1/2 marathon - 7.00am
    3. 5km - 7.50am
    4. 10km - 8.30am - at Bar Beach
    5. 2k4Kids - 10.00am 
    6. A turn point in the Honeysuckle precinct for all events (except the marathon) will be near Worth Place on the Honeysuckle Foreshore. This is the same turn point for all events (except the Marathon). 
  6. The Half Marathon will start on Wharf Rd and run 550m east towards Nobbys and then turn and run back to the start line (on the road). Runner then have exactly 20km to run. The course is the reverse Hill to Harbour 10km to Bar Beach, then return doing exactly the same course to the finish line. All turn points well marshalled. 
  7. The 5km will start heading East until Nobbys area, where you will run straight through the roundabout and then turn at the end of the car parking on the eastern side of Nobbys Surf Club and then back along Wharf Rd to the Honeysuckle turn and then back to the finish. This is a very fast and flat course.
  8. The section between King Edward Park and Zaara St is changed for 2021 due to construction at South Newcastle Beach. Runners heading south will run from the road along Shortland Espl onto the footpath at Zaara St and stay on this path until a section where they will run past the construction zone into a protected chute, then return to the path. 1/2 Marathon runners will continue up the path to the James Fletcher Park where runners will turn left and follow the paths to the top of Watt St, where they will run back onto the road leading into King Edward Park where they will run down towards the Cliff area to a turn point. They will then return and head up King Edward Park as per our regular course. The same will occur in reverse for runners heading south. Note that this means that Shortland Esplanade (Zaara to Watt) and Watt St remain open to traffic at all times. The paths are not wide and we ask you to be courteous when passing. 
  9. The Bathers Way section of paths at the top of King Edward Park are now open and runners will use these paths to connect with Memorial Drive, where they will run on the closed road. This means runners should not enter the top King Edward Park carpark. Please stay on the paths.

Timing Chips and Bibs 

Timing chips will be attached to your race bib number. They are separate and reusable. The bib should be attached with supplied pins to your shirt on the chest. You must unpack the timing chip and wear it on your shoe. (connected with the shoe lace). See diagram below. If you do not have laces please ask for a cable tie at the registration table. Note NO chip = no race time. The chips need to register over the blue/purple mats at the finish and split points. 

Getting to your start on Race Day - Buses

The finish for all events is Market St Lawn opposite Queens Wharf on the Foreshore, off Wharf Rd Newcastle. For 10km runners ONLY, we are running buses from the Harbour Foreshore and also from the car park at the corner of Hannell and Honeysuckle Drive to the 10km start from 6.30am to 7.45am . Note there are three buses who will shuttle during this time and the last bus will leave at 7.45am.  Pick up is in Watt St next to Customs House, or the Crn of Hannell and Honeysuckle Drive car park. We will have signage.  


Bag Security / transport

Due to the COVID plan we are discouraging this regular practice, however we realise it is unavoidable for some lone runners. Hence will be have a limited, contact free system for 10km competitors which will allow some valuables to be transported to the finish line. A similar process will be in place at the finish line, however we DISCOURAGE you bringing any major items.


We strongly recommend using public transport to get to the event...HOWEVER, for the early races this is not very practical. A few points:
There is FREE car parking on corner of Hannell St and Honeysuckle Drive. This is just 230m to the Light Rail interchange, which starts early,  or a 2km warm up to the start line for the marathon,  1/2 marathon, 5 and 2km races. 
For 10km runners, you can also park here and a bus will be picking up from 6.30am - 7.45am to take you the Bar Beach start line. There will also be a pick up at Customs House in Watt St . 
There is paid parking at Honeysuckle in Wright Lane. You can access Wharf Rd from the CBD via a crossing point near Market St. 

Drink Stations

There are drink stations no more than 3km apart on all courses.   Due to COVID there will be water on all stations, however we have decided to offer limited electrolyte for marathon and half marathon runners only. These will be at the Queens Wharf  and Bar Beach Drink station and Bar Beach. For runners that require special electrolyte we suggest leaving your special needs at the Queens Wharf Drink Station for collection. The station at Queens Wharf will have bagged lollies for marathon runners. You will need to shout out in advance on race day to get these on the run. 

First aid

We have a professional paramedical team on hand at this event including mobile units around the course. 


There are toilets at the start/finish and also King Edward Park and Nobbys. You must leave and enter the course at the same point when using the toilets. 

Running and Surf Clubs on the JOB

With the event running straight past most of the Surf Life Saving Clubs, you will be glad to know that Nobbys and Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Clubs are using the event to raise funds for their clubs. Give them a smile as you run past or take a drink from one of the nippers and senior club members helping their clubs raise funds to keep us safe on city beaches. Our friends at the 530 runners, MACCA's MOB  and Newcastle Rowing Club are also on the job. Thanks to all our friends in the running/sport community.
